Island Celebrates July Fourth
Hundreds of locals and visitors alike celebrated US Independence Day in Benito Juarez Park downtown in Cozumel last night.
The event was organized by Americans living locally and the Cozumel Tourism Department to help promote tourism and the knowledge of US culture.
Spectacular fireworks were accompanied by presentations and US music for singing and dancing. A local band played under the masterful baton of Francisco Arochi in a performance called "Show USA".
This was followed by a Don Humberto Castillo singing "New York New York" and "My Way", originally made famous by US legend Frank Sinatra and a performance by the Danza L?pez dance company called "Dangerous".
Independence Day - commonly known as July Fourth - is a federal holiday in the US. It marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from Great Britain.
Originally called wilmacozumel.com, this website was set up in 2005 to provide reliable, balanced, independent information about Cozumel after Hurricane Wilma.
Today, it continues to offer free news and information from Cozumel.
Although the site may be used to publicise or sell products and services, its main purpose is to promote tourism on the island as a whole.
